DNS 1.1.1.3 to block adult content & malware

In your fight for purity, understand that to give into the porn temptation, you need 3 things:

  1. Access to pornographic content
  2. Time
  3. Place

This post can help with that first one. Access. While not foolproof, a simple and powerful tool is to configure your home Internet access to use the free, fast, and rather awesome Cloudflare DNS service.

Introducing 1.1.1.1 for Families
Introducing 1.1.1.1 for Families — the easiest way to add a layer of protection to your home network and protect it from malware and adult content.

I have used this in my home for years. Every device that connects to my WiFi will have adult content and malware sites blocked. This includes guests in my home.

There really isn't any downside. In fact, one of the slowest parts of your Internet browsing can be the DNS resolution. DNS stands for Domain Name Service. It is how your computer figures out the address of the server you want to connect to. DNS translates the name "www.google.com", for example, to a routable network address. Cloudflare DNS servers are probably faster than your current ISP's name servers. So using this service can actually speed up your browsing while blocking malware and adult content.

How to configure

Setting up the 1.1.1.3 DNS server for your home Internet is not difficult, but it is specific to your Internet router. You might be able to figure this out using the instructions from Cloudflare. However, I stand ready to provide tech support. I am happy to help your family set this up. It's free and it just works in the background.

What about mobile data?

You can also configure your phone to use a private/custom DNS server so regardless of what network you are connected to, your phone will use the Cloudflare 1.1.1.3 DNS.
